A familiar café interior reappears through layered colour and exposed surfaces, recognisable yet gently unsettled. 

This painting returns to the same café interior as There Was Time After All, approached through a different register of attention. Rather than holding the space in quiet realism, colour and texture are allowed to surface more insistently, revealing the painting’s construction alongside its setting. 

Collaged elements and oil paint remain visible in layered strata. Earlier marks are left partially exposed, interrupting any sense of a single, fixed moment. Colour is heightened and slightly unmoored from observation, loosening the image so that perception shifts across the surface rather than settling into place. 

The café remains recognisable, yet altered. Familiar forms are held with a degree of distance, as though seen through accumulation rather than immediacy. What is presented is not a change of subject, but a change in how the space is carried. 

The work stands as the first of a paired exploration, opening a quiet dialogue between surfaces that describe and surfaces that drift.
