The Night Was Enough

White butterflies move among luminous cherry blossoms, held across two panels as twilight deepens and light slowly shifts.

These paired paintings hold white butterflies moving among cherry blossoms in full bloom, set within a twilight atmosphere where light both softens and deepens. Against a dark, layered ground, the blossoms appear luminous, recalling the way flowering trees seem to glow at dusk or beneath moonlight.

Built through multiple layers of oil paint, the works develop depth through transparency and contrast. Drips of fluid colour — Prussian blue, dioxazine purple, and quinacridone violet — form an abstracted background, allowing the blossoms to emerge gradually with quiet clarity. The movement of the paint remains visible, so the surface carries both stillness and flow.

The butterflies pass between shadow and glow. Some forms hold briefly in sharper focus, while others soften and recede into the darker layers beneath. Visibility shifts across the surface, blurring distinctions between emergence and withdrawal as light moves rather than settles.

The scene remains unframed by explanation. Butterflies and blossoms occupy the space without emphasis, held within the density of the moment itself. Together, the two works sustain a single atmosphere, asking only that the viewer remain long enough for the light to change.
