An Ordinary Place, Held Differently (No.2)

Enchanted Spaces
Mixed media (oil on canvas), 2025
60 x 50 cm (23.62 x 19.68 inches)

The café interior loosens further, appearing in fragments that surface and dissolve within layered colour and gesture.

This painting continues the exploration begun in An Ordinary Place, Held Differently (No.1), carrying the same café interior into a more loosened register. Fragments of the space remain — suggestions of furniture, light, and depth — but the scene is no longer organised around stable depiction. Instead, it unfolds through colour, gesture, and rhythm.

Recognisable elements surface briefly before dissolving back into the painted field. These moments act as points of orientation rather than fixed structures, allowing the space to be sensed without fully resolving into place.

Layers overlap, forms soften, and perspective loosens, yet the work does not move into complete abstraction. The café remains present at the edges, altered but intact, held in suspension as the surface continues to shift.

Together with (No.1), the painting completes a paired movement, where the familiar is neither fixed nor lost, but briefly encountered and then allowed to recede.
